Mr. Luther "Wayne" Whitaker, age 65, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born Jan. 14, 1949, in Lancaster County, the son of Luther Whitaker and the late Edna Faulkenberry Whitaker and was the husband of Donna Martin Whitaker.

Mr. Whitaker was a retired welder and a member of High Point Freewill Baptist Church. He was a Mason with Jackson Lodge, a member of Disabled Veterans, a lifetime member of VFW and served our great country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam War.
Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Donna M. Whitaker of the home; his father Luther Whitaker of Lancaster; two daughters, Rhonda Abbott and her husband, Billy, of Heath Springs, and Angela Kirk and her husband, Randy, of Kershaw; a stepson, Brad Edward Carpenter; two brothers, Gary Whitaker and his wife, Dale, of Lancaster, and David Whitaker and his wife, Darlene, of Chesnee; three sisters, Renee Thomas, Diane Scott and Patsy Killen and her husband, Jim, all of Lancaster; and four grandchildren, Frankie Abbot, Rayne Varnador, Beth Abbot and Samantha Kirk.
A service of remembrance for Mr. Whitaker is 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the chapel of Burgess Funeral Home by the Revs. Howard Messer and Steve Martin. Entombment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family of Mr. Whitaker will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the funeral home and the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Disabled Veterans Association, P.O. Box 15301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 or www.dav.org .
