Mildred Clarke Hart, 94, wife of the late Richard McDuffie Hart, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Morningside of Lancaster. She was born in Canon, Ga. on June 25, 1919, and was a daughter of the late Addison Bowman and Maude McCarter Clarke. Mrs. Hart was a member of Mauldin United Methodist Church for over 60 years where she taught Sunday school classes from ages two to adults, and served in many leadership roles. She spent many hours organizing the church's archives and was a recipient of the Heritage Award. Additionally Mildred was active in her community. She was Mauldin's first librarian, instrumental in getting financing for the Langdon Cheves Library, and in 1978, the Golden Strip Civitans named her "Citizen of the Year" and the Lions and Rotary Clubs gave her this honor later. During her retirement years, she volunteered over 1000 hours with the Greenville County Adult Literacy Program. For 34 years, Mildred taught many different subjects, coached basketball and tennis teams, directed plays and, prior to her retirement, was the librarian at Hillcrest and Mauldin High Schools. She was a 50 year plus member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and an honorary international society of outstanding women teachers. She is survived by her son, Richard M. Hart Jr. and his wife, Janet of Athens, Ala.; three daughters, Emily Jordan and her husband, Alan, of Lancaster, Alicia Hinson and her husband, Jimmy, of Mt. Pleasant and Melanie Jones and he husband, Jerome, of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Chase and Jason Hart; Alison Jordan Garzon and her husband, John, Amy Jordan Ladd and her husband, Philip, Ashley Hinson DeMooney and her husband, Clayton, J. Clarke Hinson, Cameron and Mallory Jones; four great-grandchildren, Alex and Aidan Garzon and Tatum and Mattie DeMooney; sisters-in-laws, Pat Hart of Easley and Patsy Clarke of Raleigh; and many nieces and nephews. Committal services are 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at Dacusville United Methodist Church. Memorial services are 2 p.m Thursday, June 6, at Mauldin United Methodist Church. A visitation at the church will follow the service. Condolences may be expressed online at or in person at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, which is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Epworth Children's Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250, Mauldin United Methodist Church, 100 E. Butler Road, Mauldin, SC 29662, or to the charity of your choice. Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, is caring for the Hart family.
