Mrs. Myrtle Altonia Swofford Walters, 79, wife of Eustice Hinson Walters of Lancaster passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at her home following a long illness. She was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Inman and was a daughter of the late Howard Bivens Swofford and Myrtle Altonia Cox Swofford. She graduated from Winthrop College and received a master's degree in education from the University of South Carolina. She was a life-long educator, first as a home economist with Clemson extension services and later as a kindergarten teacher at Buford Elementary School. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, led vacation Bible school and was active in many church ministries. She served her community as a Meals on Wheels volunteer and hosted children from Connie Maxwell Children's Home. She was a member of the S.C. Education Association. Mrs. Walters is survived by her husband, Eustice Walters; a son William Van Walters of Lancaster; daughters, Donna Lawrence and her husband, Chuck, of Chapin and Julie Walters-Steele and her husband, Tom, of Stuart, Va.; brothers, James M. Swofford and his wife, Vera, and Robert C. Swofford of Inman; and a sister, Alice Smith of Simpsonville; five grandchildren, Cody Lawrence, John Lawrence, Bailey Steele, Harper Steele and SaVanna Walters; a step-grandson, Todd Lawrence; and an extended family, including many in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family extends gratitude to Hospice of S.C. care-givers, Effie Deese, especially, Laura Davidson and Laura Peacock; and friends and family for prayers and visits. Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Walters are 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Charles Bradley, with burial in the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 10, at Lancaster Funeral Home.
