LANCASTER – A graveside service for Robert Victor Davis Jr., 82, of Lancaster will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, in Westside Cemetery, with the Rev. Shelly Holder officiating.
Mr. Davis died Thursday, Nov. 2.
Born Dec. 21, 1934, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Dr. R. Victor Davis Sr. and Sue Mae Laney Plyler Davis.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Plyler Davis.
He was an alumnus of Duke University for chemistry), The University of North Carolina for law, The University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration, and the Defense Department Language Institute, Monterey, California for Russian.
He was a member of American Mensa, INTERTEL, Top-One-Percent Society, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International and National Association of Accountants.
He served in the U.S. Army branch of the National Security Agency at Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan. After leaving the Army, he worked for several years in the Tax Department of Springs Industries in Lancaster. Upon being graduated with a MBA, he went to work in Orangeburg, for the Wannamaker Chemical Company which evolved into Ethyl Corporation/Albemarle Corp.
Mr. Davis was an avid collector. He had a large library on many diverse subjects including History, geography, geology, theology, sociology, art, design, travel, humor and languages.
He and his wife collected early North Carolina pottery, Catawba Indian pottery, English watercolors, sixteenth through twentieth century etchings and engravings. Their favorite vacations were trips through New England searching out rare and unusual books and antiques. His favorite places included Monterey, Calif.; Hokkaido, Japan; Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Manchester, Vt.
He loved humor and liked to see people laugh. He loved knowledge and intelligence.
Surviving are his wife, Joanna B. Davis of Lancaster; and numerous cousins, including Elizabeth Wilson of Great Falls, Rod Plyler of Lancaster, Jo Anne Plyler of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mike Shannon of Tucson, Ariz.
The family suggests memorials may be made to The Archives, First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 608, Lancaster, SC 29721. The family will receive friends following the service.
