NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Sara Lundie was born April 24, 1931, in Lancaster.
She was the daughter of the late Franklin Pierce Bell and Docia Threat Blackmon Bell.
She passed peacefully on the evening of March 8, 2014, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Va.
Sara was a graduate of Lancaster High School Class of 1948. After graduation she moved to Portsmouth, Va., where she pursued a civil service career with the U.S. Navy at Saint Julians Creek and Yorktown Naval Weapons Station.
She retired after 30 years with the government and began a second career as a defense consultant with Northrup Grumman. She also earned her real estate license and began a third career with L&M Realty.
Along the way, she purchased distressed properties, made improvements herself, and placed them on the rental market. For the past eight years she pursued a fourth career as senior tax preparer with H&R Block.
Sara earned her way into the Guinness Book of World Records as a 15-year survivor of pancreatic cancer and was cancer-free when she passed.
In association with her son, Ken Lundie, she produced two off-Broadway touring companies of "An Evening with the Gershwins" starring Rex Reed and "For Lovers Only".
Sara had a loving heart and was caretaker for her mother, husband, mother-in-law and sister when they were in their final years. She was fun-loving and had a terrific sense of humor that lit up the room with smiles and laughter upon her arrival. She made frequent trips between Virginia and South Carolina where she maintained a home and visited friends and family. Sara was a member of Camp Creek United Methodist Church in Lancaster and was a generous contributor to the Docia T. Bell Recreational Pavilion and Cemetery Fund.
Sara is survived by her son, Kenneth Lundie of New York City; her sister Mary Bell Norman of Virginia Beach, Va.; and her adopted son, James Doran Jr. of Portsmouth. She is also survived by nieces, Martha Jo Hardin Sinclair of Lancaster, Barbara Couch Dickson of Cheraw and Faye Henry Farmer of Lancaster; and nephews, Shannon Hardin of Las Vegas, Ernest Blackmon of Lancaster, Billy Blackmon of Portsmouth, Emerson Couch of Lancaster, Robert Couch of Lancaster, Ronald Norman of Fort Mill, Timothy Norman of Williamsburg, Va., Richard Norman of Leesburg, Va., and Jeffrey Norman of Disputanta, Va.
Sara is predeceased by her husband, Fred Lundie; brothers, Earl Blackmon, Dan Blackmon and Eldon Blackmon; sisters, Pauline Blackmon Williams, Erma Lee Blackmon Henry, Ernestine Blackmon Couch and Dorothy Bell Hardin. She is also predeceased by nieces, Grace Blackmon Thompson, Diane Blackmon Evans and Ara Jean Blackmon Farmer; and nephews David Henry and Bobby Phillips.
The family will receive friends at from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at McLean Funeral Directors Mahaffey Chapel.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Camp Creek United Methodist Church, 4721 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720. The Rev. Michael Catoe will officiate the ceremony followed by the burial at the Camp Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in honor of Sara Lundie for the "Fund for Families in Need." Please make checks payable to Camp Creek United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held in Newport News on a date to be announced and information will be posted on the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel website.
