Mrs. Shelby Jean Gardner Outen, 75, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 16, 1937, in Lancaster and was a daughter of the late William Kirby and Martha Carmon Roberts Gardner.
Mrs. Outen was the widow of William Thomas "Bill" Outen, of Lancaster.
Mrs. Outen was a member of West Side Baptist Church. She had varied interest and was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves. The church also played a vital role in her life. Mrs. Outen was an active choir member, involved with the Women's Missionary Union and served as Sunday school class treasurer.
Mrs. Outen is survived by two sons, William T. "Billy" Outen Jr. of Lancaster and Steve Outen and his wife, Susie, of Weddington; three daughters, Sandra Terry and her husband, Jimmy, Jeanette Wright and her husband, Ron, all of Lancaster and Nancy Outen Mangum and her boyfriend, Steve Garris, of Heath Springs; seven grandchildren, Lori Wright, Jamie Greene, Joey Outen, Angela Woodward, Steven Outen, Danielle Outen and Kayla Mangum; and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Gardner and his wife, Oveda, of Kathleen, Ga., and Paul Gardner and his wife, Madelaine of Watervliet, N.Y..; and a sister, Ann Lowery and her husband, Louie, of Lancaster.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, William Gardner Jr., JC Gardner, Richard Gardner and Tommy Gardner.
Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Outen were 3 p.m. Monday, May 20, at West Side Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Todd Robinson, with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park.
