Stephen Hill Dobbins, 69, died Oct. 8, 2012, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 12, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Oakland Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Shrum, officiating and Dr. Randy Wright assisting. Visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
Mr. Dobbins was a native of Cliffside, N.C., and the son of the late Clarence J. and Rose Hill Dobbins. He was a textile chemistry graduate of N.C., State University and received his master's degree from the University of South Carolina. He retired from Springs Industries, Lancaster with 37 years of service, where he was employed as a textile chemist and systems analyst. Mr. Dobbins served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1971, and was a captain at discharge. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church, was an Eagle Scout and served as a past Scout Master. Mr. Dobbins enjoyed canoeing, reading, photography, and spending time in the mountains of Ashe County, N.C. He had a smile that could light up the room and loved exchanging funny stories with his many friends.
Mr. Dobbins is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dr. Edith Jolley Dobbins of the home; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley Jolley Padgett and Dr. William Cameron Padgett of Chocowinity, N.C.; his nephews, Dr. Rick Padgett and wife, Kristina and Dr. Chris Padgett and wife, Ashley and several great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kay Dobbins Mason.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Dobbins' name to Oakland Baptist Church, 1087 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
