FORT LAWN – Mr. Mendel Wayne Godfrey, 77, of Fort Lawn, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his home with loving family and friends.
Mr. Godfrey was born in Cowpens to Robert and Tessable Godfrey on Oct. 7, 1936.
He went on to join the U.S. Marine Corps in 1955 at the age of 19 years old until being honorably discharged in 1957.
He began working as a pipe superintendent with Fluor Daniels Construction, traveling all across the U.S. as well as the world, later retiring after 35 years. He then went on to work for Securitas as a security guard at Omnova Solutions in Chester, earning recognition for outstanding service as Officer of the Quarter two times in 2009.
He enjoyed reading his Bible, as well as many different types of books, and spending time with family.
Mr. Godfrey is survived by his wife, Barbara Godfrey of Fort Lawn; a daughter, Angelia "Angel" and her husband, Carson Adams, of Fort Lawn; five sons, Jeffrey "Cowboy" Godfrey of Lancaster, Floyd Godfrey and his wife, Wanda, of Leslie, James "Mark" Godfrey of Camden, Peter "Gary" Godfrey and Kurt Godfrey, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Mr. Godfrey is preceded in death by his father, Robert Godfrey; mother, Tessable Godfrey Southern; and stepfather, Gerald Southern.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 2, at Lancaster Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Fort Lawn at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, with the Rev. Dr. V. Ray Robinson and Rev. Jimmy Jordan officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Fort Lawn at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his wife, Barbara Godfrey, P.O. Box 201, Fort Lawn, SC 29714 for the Alzheimer's treatment and ongoing medical expenses.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Interim Hospice Care of Rock Hill and all family and friends who have taken their time to bring food and smiles as well as helping hands during these trying times.
Mr. Godfrey now has his new body in a heavenly home with his heavenly father with no more worries, no more tears and no more pain. God bless.
