Charles Eugene Gates Sr., of Lancaster, passed away Friday, June 20th, 2014.
He was born November 22nd, 1935, in McAdenville, NC, a son of the late Charlie and Mable Ingle Gates.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Gates and Jack Gates.
Charles is survived by his children, Charles E. Gates Jr. and wife, Laura, of Rock Hill, Gabriel D. Gates and wife, Sheila, of Greencastle, PA, J. Greggory Gates of Lancaster, Dorothy Rollins and husband, Jeff, of Monroe, NC, and Charlene Gates of Washington, DC; stepson, Michael Kim Roof of Lancaster; grandchildren, Brittany Wallace and husband, Joseph, of Rock Hill, Zachary Gates and wife, Rebecca, of Oceanside, CA, Randall Gates of Greencastle, PA, Madaline Rollins of Monroe and Lila Rollins of Monroe; brothers, John Gates and wife, Gail, of Winnsboro, Joe Gates of Darlington, and Ronnie Gates and wife, Beverly, of Rock Hill; sister, Jane Suthard and husband, Steve, of Winnsboro; sister-in-law, Melissa Gates of Honolulu,HI; great-grandchildren, Carson, Cameron and Addyson; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; beloved cousins; and many dear friends.
Charles is also survived by the mothers of his children, former wives, and friends, Doris Belk Gates and Mary Griffin Gates, both of Lancaster.
Charles graduated from Great Falls High School, served in the U.S. Navy and was a long-time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He possessed an unparalleled zest for life and had an incredible sense of humor.
