The Rev. Karl G. Bernsdorff, 65, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 10, 1948, in Lienz, Austria, the son of the late George and Ingeborg Bernsdorff. The Rev. Bernsdorff graduated from Charleston Southern University. He also attended Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated with a Master of Divinity from Columbia Lutheran Seminary.
The Rev. Bernsdorff loved people and music. He played the violin in the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and enjoyed performing. He was also very civic minded and served on various boards. The Rev. Bernsdorff served as the pastor of Faith Lutheran Church of West Columbia and was also a past pastor of the Reformation Lutheran Church of Lancaster.
He started the first "Crop Walk" in Columbia, and was on the original planning committee for the following organizations; Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies; Hope of Lancaster; and Hospice of Lancaster. In addition he served as board member of the Lancaster Children's Home as well as Springs Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Bernsdorff was also a past president of the Lancaster Rotary as well as a Paul Harris Fellow.
The funeral service for the Rev. Bernsdorff is 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Reformation Lutheran Church, with the Bishop Herman Yoos, the Revs. Guy Shealy, Gerald Bultman and Stephen Cooper officiating.
Burial is 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery, 7347 Old Number Six Highway, Elloree.
The Rev. Bernsdorff is survived by his wife, Mary L. Bernsdorff of Lancaster; two daughters, Katrina Bernsdorff and her husband, Samuel "Smokey" Farris, of Lancaster and Gretchen Thompson and her husband, Kyle, of Shorewood, Minn.; four sisters, Alexandria Hildebrand of Bricktown, N.J., Irene Zani and her husband, Bruno, of San Jose, Calif., Kyra Johnson and her husband, E.J., also of San Jose, and Nina Seelos and her husband, Scott, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Tavyn and Kolton Thompson and Ella Farris.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at Lancaster Funeral Home.
