Jerry Wayne Coble entered the presence of his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Aug. 14, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center Pineville.
Jerry was born Sept. 22, 1953, in Lancaster, to the late William C. Coble and Ruby Catoe Coble.
He was the husband of Cathy Hollis B. Coble; father of Brandon Branham (Ellen) of Summerville and Jeremiah Coble of Lancaster; grandfather of Caroline, Cassidy and Carson Branham; brother of Kathy C. Ellis (James); nephew of Mable C. Mahaffey; uncle of Mark Ellis (Donna) and Jason Ellis; and son-in-law of James E. Hollis Sr. He had many loving extended family members and friends. His faithful companion was his chihuahua, Noel.
Jerry graduated from Lancaster High School in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry 1971-74 and later served in U.S. Army National Guard Artillery until 1992. He attended the University of South Carolina Lancaster and York Technical College. He was retired from Springs Grace General Office.
Jerry was a charter member of Covenant Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was on the drama team. He and his spiritual mentor, the late Dr. William W. Duke, taught middle school boys Sunday school for many years. Jerry's heart and prayers were always with these young men. Jerry was a member of the Lancaster Gideons Camp.
Jerry enjoyed following sports, especially football, and was devoted to the USC Gamecocks. His other interests were military history and contemporary Christian music. When he was younger, he was a tournament bowler and taught bowling. In the 1990's, he was a volunteer firefighter with Gooches Crossroad Fire Department and acted supporting roles in Lancaster County Community Playhouse. He served as President of Lancaster Senior Civitans. Jerry was a kind and friendly person who loved to talk.
A celebration of life is 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Covenant Baptist Church, 165 Craig Manor Road, Lancaster, SC 29720, led by Dr. Hubert H. Welch, followed by the family receiving friends in the Covenant Fellowship Hall. A private family interment will follow at a later date.
