Mr. James Eugene "Gene" Knight 74, of Lancaster died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his residence. Gene was born May 8, 1938, son of the late Eugene G. Knight and Mattie Lou McAteer Knight. He graduated from Buford High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserves; received training at Fort Jackson and Fort Bliss, Texas.

Gene worked for Springs Industries and retired after 37 years at the Springs Grace Bleachery. He was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, the Council of Ministries, the Bus Committee, was a youth counselor and served on various other committees.
Gene was honored as Zion's Man of the Year in 2000. He served as Zion's treasurer for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Phillips Knight of 49 years and 7 months, a brother, Roy Thomas "Tommy" Knight and wife, Peggy, nephews Ricky Knight and wife, Susan, Jason Knight both of Ridgeway; nieces, Nancy K. Ackerman and husband, Danny, and Courtney Ackerman, both of Lancaster, Nicole K. Stroud and husband, Will, and Laney Knight, both of Ridgeway.
Flowers are accepted, but memorials preferred. Memorials may be made in Gene's name to Zion United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 1665 Zion Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.
