LANCASTER – Marian Joyner Gillis, 95, of Lancaster died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Springs Memorial Hospital. She was born April 28, 1917, in Murfreesboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Norman Shaw Joyner and Mattie Laura Blanchard Joyner. Gillis was married to the late James Heyward Gillis. Mrs. Gillis was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was a Christian mother, a homemaker and retired from Roses department store. Survivors include a son, Carlton Gillis and his wife, Gail, of Lancaster; a daughter, Janis Mizell and her husband, Eddie, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Margie McManus of Lancaster; two brothers, Jud Joyner and his wife, Betty, and N.S. Joyner Jr. of Charlotte; a sister, Emilie Newell of Columbia; two grandchildren, Kristi Hill and Kathryn Catoe; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Edward L. Gillis; two sisters, Mattie Earline Joyner and Donnie Joyner Helms; and two brothers, John Elliot Joyner and Ralph Truett Joyner.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Gillis will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Herman Baptist Church, 9713 Lancaster Highway, Waxhaw, N.C., officiated by the Rev. Dennis Newell. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
