Bertha 'Bert' Ann Birgy, 67, of South Boardman, MI, passed away peacefully at her home on January 3, 2014, after a fiercely fought courageous battle with Breast Cancer
. Bert was born in Centerline, MI, on November 20, 1946, to the late Wayne and Joyce (Hanley) Stone. The family moved to Mayfield, MI in 1957 and Bert was a member of the Kingsley High School Class of 1964. Bert married the love of her life, Leo Lynn Birgy, on February 1, 1964, and enjoyed 49 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 17, 2013. Together they raised two daughters in Utica, MI, moving to South Boardman in 1976.
Bert was a home maker and worked for Kalkaska Memorial Health Center from 1985 until 2008. Bert's passions included: her family, friends, car cruises in their 1957 Chevy, winter getaways, Birgy family reunions, Women's Bible Studies, attending church, as well as spending time at their cabin in Canada. She especially enjoyed being with her only grandchild Shelby, always dancing, singing, and supporting her activities.
Bert was deeply loved by many because of her caring and compassion for so many family members and dear friends. Bert was a loving, devoted, and generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many.
She is survived by her family including: daughters, Kaylynn (Duane) Rickenberg of Traverse City, MI and Barbara (Chris) Birgy Arnold of Owensboro, KY; granddaughter, Shelby (David) Moore of Plymouth, MI; brothers, Wayne (Marsha), Gerald (Constance), and Jim Stone; extended Birgy family; and her sweet dog, Meeko.
Bert's family would like to thank Dr. Lisa Hughes DO and staff at Munson Oncology, Dr. Douglas Brown, MD and staff at Munson Radiology, Julie Hartl, NP from Munson Palliative Care, along with the staff of Munson Home Health. A Celebration of Bert's Life will take place in the Chapel of Kalkaska Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. Visitations will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday prior to the Celebration Service at the Kalkaska Funeral Home, 152 S. Cedar, Kalkaska, MI. Burial will be held in the spring at the Boardman Township Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the celebration at American Legion in Fife Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cowell Family Cancer Center at Munson Hospital. Envelopes will be provided at the service.
