John G. Parker, 81, formerly of Kalkaska, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 in Lapeer Regional Medical Center in Lapeer, Mich. He was born Nov. 30, 1931 in Bay City, son to the late Clifford & Florence (Phipps) Parker.|
He graduated from High School in 1949, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until 1952. He served in the 27th Regiment, 25th Division Infantry in the Korean War. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals.
John married Rita Kane Vatter on Dec. 26, 1975. He was a construction worker and upper management in the automobile industry. He excelled in bowling and bowled with pro and semi pro bowlers. John loved to golf, dance, bowl, work on his lawn, and he loved fishing and hunting.
John is survived by his wife Rita; Richard Parker (Son) of Delaware, Douglas and Tammy Vatter (Son) of Dryden, Paige Goike (Daughter) of Sandusky, Connie and Michael Harwood (Daughter) of Owosso, Christine and Frank McCoy (Daughter) of Florida, Jacqueline Vatter (Daughter) of Harrison Twp., Clifford and Diane Parker Jr. (Brother) of Lapeer, Nanette and James Jarvis (Sister) of Ohio; 11 grandchildren: Gary, Chad, Cory, Sam, Sean, Monica, Erika, Jason, Austin, Cheyenne and Chena; and one great-grandson, Cody.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Jerry Shaw.
Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette, with Fr. Andrzej Boroch officiating.
Burial was in the St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Marlette with full military honors.
Memorials may be donated to D.A.V. or family discretion.
