Max Raines, a resident of Beverly, MA, died Sunday morning, February 17, 2013 at the Ledgewood Skilled Nursing Center.
Max Raines was born May 29, 1932 in Cullman, AL to Bertha Garrison Raines and William Auzie Raines. The family settled in Nashville, TN, where they owned and operated a small chain of shoe repair enterprises - Raines Shoe Hospitals.
Mr. Raines graduated from Nashville's West End High School in 1950 where he met his future wife, Hattie Wyatt Caraway Griffith. Both Max and Caraway attended Vanderbilt University
and married in 1951.
Max and family relocated briefly to Owensboro, KY and then to Clarksville, TN. There, Max continued in the family business tradition and managed two shoe repair shops. In the early 1970s, Max sold the businesses and began working for Acme Boots headquartered in Clarksville.
In 1977, Max and family relocated to the North Shore, where Max was employed by The United Shoe Machinery Corporation, Beverly. They lived in Salem. Max Raines and family were long-time members of the First Baptist Church of Beverly, where he was extremely active, serving in virtually every lay member capacity from usher to deacon.
Max is survived by his sister, Evelyn Clark and family; two sons, Charles Raines, David Raines and spouse; a daughter, Carole Raines Rhea and spouse; and three grandchildren, Jed, Michael-Max and Kyle.
His wife, Caraway, died in 2006.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 221 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
