Melba Pannel Newton
Melba Pannel Newton, age 82 of Clarksville, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at her home.
She was born to the late Pete F. and Ruby E. Pannel, November 29, 1931 in Blaine, MS. Melba graduated from Indianola High School and received a Degree in Nursing from King's Daughters Hospital, Greenville, MS. She married Fred Newton on September 17, 1954 and they lived in Murfreesboro and Nashville, before locating to Clarksville in 1961.
Melba was a Registered Nurse until her retirement, and was passionate about taking care of people, even after she became home bound. She worked in the orthopedics ward at Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was active in her Couples Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, where she had previously been a Children's Sunday School teacher. She loved to travel and often took trips with her husband during her lifetime.
Many knew Mrs. Newton as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a community volunteer.
Melba is survived by her husband, Fred Newton and their three children: Steve Newton/Pam, Nashville, TN, Jim Newton/Stephanie, Clarksville, TN, and Beth Newton Kramer/Cameron, Madison, AL; brothers, Doug Pannel and Thomas (Buddy) Pannel, both of Ruleville, MS. She also is survived by six grandchildren: Benjamin Newton, Logan Newton, Jennifer Newton, Jessica Kramer, Lauren Kramer, Taylor Kramer.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Melba Newton Nursing Scholarship Fund at Austin Peay State University, P.O. Box 4417, Clarksville, TN 37044.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 18th at 6 p.m., at the Chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date.
