Carl D. Hewitt III

Carl D. Hewitt III, age 63 of Waverly, TN, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2013.

Born in Chattanooga, TN to Carl and Evelyn Hewitt, he lived most of his adult life in Waverly. Carl was a Unit Operator for TVA in New Johnsonville, TN for more than 20 years.

In 1968, he joined the U.S. Army and became a 1st Lieutenant while serving in Vietnam. He was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Silver Star for heroism in battle, and for saving the lives of his platoon under heavy enemy fire.

Carl was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed working with wood, returning some of his farmland to native prairie, and spending time with his family. He was a wonderful husband of 37 years to his wife, Elaine P. Hewitt, and loving father to his three children.

He was joined in death by his wife Elaine, and his son, Wade. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Evelyn, and his sister, Carol.

He is survived by daughters, Jessica Hewitt of Santa Rosa, CA and Elizabeth Hewitt (Josh Brown) of Bandon, OR; grandsons, Spencer, Noah and Jonah Brown; sisters, Peggy Hewitt (Black) of Chatham, MA and Cynthia Hewitt of Wilmington, DE; nephew, Will Holloway of New York, NY; his aunt, Rachel Cloyd; his uncle, Burton Hewitt, both of Nashville, TN; and his stepmother, Joe Ann Hewitt of Waverly, TN.

There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Waverly, TN at 4 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Rd., Ste. #300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 in memory of Carl D. Hewitt III.
