John Austin Minton, age 61 of Clarksville, TN, died Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville after an extended illness.
Born in Madisonville, KY, he was the son of the late Robert Minton and Ethel Sue Minton Verne. Mr. Minton was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served his country in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. During his career in the Army, he received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and many more.
He was a well-loved and highly respected member of the Fort Campbell community, where he was a Military Police Officer until he left the Army in 1993. After that, Mr. Minton remained at Fort Campbell, working as a civilian in the Public Affairs department, until he retired in 2012. He was a strong and hard-working man who had a great love for his family, his country, and the Army.
Mr. Minton is survived by his wife of almost 42 years, Dixie Ray Minton of Clarksville; a daughter, Darcy (Jeff) Coomer of Glasgow, KY; a daughter, Danielle Minton of Clarksville; a son, Justin (Alicia) Minton of Smith's Station, AL; eight grandchildren, Chase, Bryce, and Reece Coomer, Gabriel Lomax, River, Rowan, and Rayanne Minton, and John William Minton; a sister, Diana Croxton of Central City, KY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepfather, Ernest Verne; and a brother, William Cook.
Per Mr. Minton's request, a private family service will be held and he will be buried with full military rites at the Kentucky Veteran's Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, KY.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Fisher House Foundation.
