BARBARA ANNE SUMMERVILLE TOHM, 76 Barbara Anne Summerville Tohm, 76, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2014 due to cancer at Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, FL surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind her husband of 59 years, Bruce Edward Tohm; daughter, Julie Tohm Harris; granddaughter, Katrina Tohm; and grandson, Joseph (JoJo) Harris. Barbara was born on June 7, 1937 in Utica, New York to Lillian Pearl Linger Summerville and John Glen Summerville. She lived most of her childhood in North Jackson, Ohio. Barb married Bruce at age 17 on April 2, 1955. They settled in Miami, Florida in 1964. Barbara was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also an amazing educator and friend to many. After being a stay- at- home wife and mother for many years, Barb finally fulfilled her dream of earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami in 1969. She taught Biology and Marine Biology for 20 + years for the Miami-Dade County Public school system. Next would come three Master's Degrees and a big move up the career ladder. She worked tirelessly at the MDCPS district office in Advanced Academics and ended her career doing consultant work in Critical Thinking in districts/schools all around the United States. She touched the lives of many students and educators who learned excellence through her leadership. After retiring, Barb and Bruce moved to Lakeland, Florida in 2004. Barb's favorite thing to do was travel the United States and Europe. She also had a love for learning, history and the arts. Even in retirement, she was a volunteer docent and board member at the Polk Museum of Art. She was also a member of the Tuesday Music Club and volunteered at the Polk Theatre. She continued taking courses in Creative Writing at Florida Southern College, just for fun. Friends and family will remember Barbara as a confident, positive woman with a giving heart. People from all walks of life were drawn to Barbara's spirit and presence and sought her advice. She gave honest and valuable advice towards living a successful and fulfilling life. It was apparent in the way she lived, that her own life was happy and complete. She was an amazing cook and hostess and loved to have a good time, wherever she was. She was definitely the life of the party! Ovarian Cancer tried to get the best of her in 2010. She beat it with an ugly stick and won that battle. However, when the cancer returned a few months ago, she realized the Lord had a plan for her. Heaven needed a party coordinator, and Barbara is now there to host it. Barb's wishes were for no viewing, wake, funeral or teary eyes. Arrangements for a "Celebration of Barb's Life" is being planned. To contact the family: 219 East Beacon Road, Lakeland, FL 33803 or Bruce can be reached at 863-425-1928. In lieu of family donations, Barbara's wish was for family and friends to support their favorite charity. Read Obituary
