MARY EVELYN SMITH, 81 WINTER HAVEN - Mary Evelyn Smith, 81, of Winter Haven, went on to be with the Lord Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Winter Haven Health and Rehabilitation. Born May 13, 1935 in Cottonwood, AL, she moved here in 1953. She was a homemaker and a member of The Way at Inwood Baptist Church in Winter Haven. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Smith, Sr. in 2004. She is survived by: a son, James E. Smith, Jr. and his wife Patsey of Winter Haven, 3 daughters, Teresa A Knaack and her husband Tony of Lakeland, FL, Linda F. McNulty and her husband Peter of Winter Haven and Anna V. Grimes and her husband, Glenn of Winter Haven; 2 brothers, Charles Hodges and his wife Nell of Dothan, AL and Albert Hodges and his wife Clarice of Elba, AL; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9:00am till 10:00am, Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven. Funeral Services will follow at 10:00am in the funeral home chapel. RUTH VIRGINIA SMITH, 90 LAKELAND - Ruth Virginia Smith, 90, of Lakeland, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, August 21, 2016. Ruth was born on October 2, 1925 in Norton, Virginia to Walton and Faye Carter and was one of seven children. Ruth was preceded in death by Roy George, her husband of 56 years and her oldest child, Joyce Faye Henderson (Tony). Surviving family members include her brother Walton Carter, Jr., and sister Margaret Ossea. Surviving children include Roy Richard Smith (Julia) and Caroline Margaret Bradley (Larry). Grandchildren include Kenneth Henderson (Denise), Christy Henderson (Robin), Jason Smith (Jessica), Jennifer Crowley (Richard), Greg Bradley (Brad), Adrien Kiff (Paul) and Arien Phillips (Allen). Great Grandchildren include Jaime Paine (Kyle), Shelby Brooke Crowley, Madison Phillips, Skylar Smith, MacLaine Kiff and Avery Smith. Funeral will be held at Gentry Morrison Funeral Home, 3350 Mall Hill Drive, Lakeland, Florida, on Wednesday, August 24, 2016. Visitation will be at 10am. Services will start at 11am. The family wishes to Thank all of the caregivers, Sandy, Linda and Joie who were involved in her day to day care.

VETTER, ELIZABETH ANN  
ELIZABETH ANN VETTER, 92 LAKELAND - Elizabeth Ann Vetter, 92, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016. Born November 28, 1923, in Elyria, Ohio to Thaddeus and Mabel Robson. She went to Elyria High School and graduated in 1941, and also went to business school. She worked for J.C. Penny; two law firms and Bendix Westinghouse. She met Arthur in 1940 and married October 23, 1943, and were married for 67 years until Art passed away in 2013. During their marriage they moved from Elyria, Ohio, to Washington Court House, Ohio, to Mountainside, New Jersey, to Lakeland, Florida, to Memphis, Tennessee, to Tulsa, Oklahoma and finally back to Lakeland where they settled in 1976. Elizabeth was dedicated to her family, son, Edwin (Lana); granddaughter, Jennifer (Keith Stahl); grandson, Eric and four great grandchildren, Kaleb, Ethan, Hannon and Blake. In her 'spare' time she was a devoted volunteer at Lakeland Regional Medical Center where she and Art accumulated over 100,000 volunteer hours. She was also twice president of the LRMC Volunteers. A private graveside service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016, for family and close friends. ELIZABETH M. CARTER, 69 LAKELAND - Elizabeth M. Carter, 69, passed away August 16, 2016. Mrs. Carter was born in Jacksonville, FL on March 28, 1947, and was a member of Ignited Church in Lakeland. She loved her grandbabies and family, and will be deeply missed by them all. Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband, Frank A. Carter, Jr.; sons, Frank A. Carter, III and Michael A. Carter; daughter, Amy B. Scanlon; brothers, Jack and Clay Newton; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Little Michael. Funeral services will be conducted Tues. at 2 p.m. at Gentry Morrison Funeral Home at Serenity Gardens, 3350 Mall Hill Dr. Lakeland.

EILEEN BOWTON GARD, 98 COLUMBUS, OH. - Eileen Bowton Gard, 98, passed away Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio, with devoted family members by her side until the time of her transition to the loving arms of God. Born in 1918 in Trivoli, Illinois, Eileen loved family celebrations, Sunday brunch, talking politics, playing bridge, gardening, Ohio State Buckeyes football, PGA golf, and reading. She believed deeply in education, and sponsored educational opportunities for many individuals. She especially enjoyed visits, hugs and kisses from family and friends, and cherished her husband, Harry. Eileen's life was filled with strength, humor, a loving nature and many friends and family who loved her dearly. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Harry Kendrick Gard, and her brothers Donald Bowton and Kenneth Bowton. Eileen is survived by her children Ellen Gard Winterbottom, Julia Gard Wilkins and her husband, Jeffrey M. Wilkins, Lynne Gard Poston and her husband John Poston, Harry Kendrick Gard, Jr. and his wife Kimberly Williams Gard. She was blessed with a very large family including grandchildren and great grandchildren Ann Ackerman (Taylor (Karla) Sturtz, Audrey and Ethan Ackerman), Christine Bren, Psy.D. (Stefan, Avery), Jill Dem-ko and her husband Tom (Miles, Mason), Timothy Winterbottom, Lisa Wilkins Doran and her husband Andrew Thomas, M.D. (Michael and Julia Doran, Jacob Thomas), Laura Wilkins Cooke and her husband Christopher (Christine, Caroline, Em-ma, Elizabeth), Jeffrey Gard Wilkins and his wife Ashley (Alexander, Spen-cer, Lucy), Griffin Gard, John D. Poston and his wife Amanda, Margaret Poston Northup and her husband John (Ellie, Anders), Elloise Gard, M.D., nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Eileen's family would like to thank the amazing doctors and nurses at The OSU Wexner Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be sent to The Wellington School 3650 Reed Road, Columbus, OH 43220, or to the OSU Wexner Medical Center. A Celebration of Life was held in Columbus, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Schoedinger Northwest Chapel.
