"CAL" ADAMS, 86
BARTOW - Augustus Calvin "Cal" Adams, 86, passed away May 22, 2009 at Consulate Health Care in Lakeland from Heart Failure.
Augustus Calvin "Cal" Adams was born in Yorktown, Texas on March 3, 1923. He graduated from Hot Springs Arkansas Senior High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marines from 1941 through 1946. He was with the 1st Division Guadalcanal and served in five combat missions. He received a Presidential Citation.
After his service in the military, Augustus married Lucille Holmes, now deceased. They had three sons. Presently, Mr. Adams has eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Also, after the military, he attended Historical Restoration instructions and served six years as a restoration contractor in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Adams moved his family to Bartow, Florida in 1956 and attended Florida Atlantic and the University of Florida. He received a general building contractor's license and worked for the Department of Transportation Maintenance Division for six years. He was in charge of all construction in the First District except roads and bridges.
He accepted a job with the Polk County Commission as Department Head and was Polk County's first Building and Zoning Codes Official from 1976 until 1982; after which he worked as a General Contractor for all of Polk County, including Bartow, retiring in 1994.
Mr. Adams is a past member of the Bartow Kiwanis Club, and the Bartow Lions Club at that time. He served on the Polk County Code Enforcement Board, is a member of the Bartow Chamber of Commerce, is a Board Member of the Cancer Committee, a board member of the Peace River Center, lifetime member of the Polk County Historical Committee, lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion Post 2207, and is an Elder at the Bartow Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Mr. Adams served on the Bartow City Commission for six years during which time he held the office as Mayor of the City of Bartow in 2004 and part of 2005.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille F. Adams and is survived by three sons Jeff Holmes of Greensboro, NC; Gary Adams of Pine Mountain, GA and Alan Adams of Bartow, FL; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Tuesday 05/26/2009 from 6-8pm at the Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow and services will follow on Wednesday 05/27/2009 at 11 AM at The Bartow First Baptist Church.
