SAN FRANCISCO, CA. - Dr. Edward W. Geathers, age 90, passed away Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 in San Francisco, California, due to an inoperable aneurysm.
He was born August 14, 1922 in Winter Haven, Florida to George E. and Mayme V. Geathers, the third of four children - three boys and one girl. He was predeceased by his mother, father and sister Fredericka Geathers Williams.
He is survived by his wife Dr. Marquenta Geathers, former wife Mattie Geathers and daughter Leslie Geathers of San Francisco, CA, brothers Lemuel L. Geathers (wife Juanita) of Winter Haven, FL and Elmer D. Geathers of Washington, DC. as well as several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Edward grew up in Winter Haven and attended school in Polk County. He was in the first class to graduate from Polk County Training School in 1939 - forerunner to Jewett High School. After High School he entered Bethune Cookman College in Daytona, FL. Drafted from school for World War II he served as a radioman for the US Navy in Hawaii. After the war he entered Howard University in Washington, DC for the pre-med program. After graduation he entered Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and graduated in 1954.
In 1954 Dr. Geathers came back home to Winter Haven to practice medicine and was admitted to practice at Winter Haven Hospital with full privileges. He left Winter Haven in 1961 for advanced studies in medicine in San Francisco. He practiced for many years as a specialist in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
