LAKELAND - James White Meeks, Jr., age 64, passed away on November 9, 2012, due to complications from surgery.
He was born in Lakeland, Florida on May 23, 1948 and resided in Lakeland his entire life except for serving his country during Vietnam [October 1967 to October 1971]. Much of his Navy career was spent aboard the USS Orleck. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He was predeceased by his parents, Anita Taylor Meeks and James White Meeks, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda McMachen Meeks; son, James White Meeks III of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughters, Amanda [Mark] Hammond of Lakeland, Melody Meeks of Greensboro, N.C., Mandy [William] Lyon of St. Petersburg, FL, and one granddaughter, Olivia. He is also survived by sister, Julia Anne Meeks of Jacksonville, FL and a brother, Charles Brent Meeks of Auburndale.
He retired from the City of Lakeland following 25 years of service. He also did electrical inspections for Polk County.
James loved his family and enjoyed his hobbies auto racing, golf and boating at his vacation home in Englewood.
Visitation will be at 10A.M. Tuesday, November 13th, followed by a Memorial Service at 11 A.M. with a light reception at Heath Funeral Chapel, 328 S. Ingraham Avenue, Lakeland, Fl. 33801. In lieu of flowers donations may be made online to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, at St.Jude.org.
