LAKE WALES - Malcolm Robertson "Mac" McKinley, Jr. died in his sleep at home Saturday, September 29, 2012 after a long term illness.
Mac was born June 17, 1928 in Lowell, Massachusetts to Malcolm and Ola McKinley. His family moved to Tampa, Florida where he grew up and graduated from Plant High School. He attended Amherst College, then the University of Florida, where he graduated with degrees in English and Agriculture. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. McKinley ("Mr. Mac") had a lifelong interest in Agriculture and worked in the citrus industry for over fifty years. After the war and his graduation from UF, he went to work at the Citrus Experiment Station in Lake Alfred and then became a shareholder and manager of Highland Park Service Company in Lake Wales. He participated in industry efforts and associations over the years, including his membership and service as president of the Lake Wales Citrus Growers Association.
He was a man of few words. An avid sailor and fisherman, lifelong student and accomplished pianist, Mac was a great father, husband, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by sons, Jim, Richard and Bill McKinley; sister, Louise Brown; brother, Donald McKinley; former wife, Virginia McKinley; grandchildren, Donpaul, Sara, Jesse, Sam, Logan and Hannah; step-children, Robert Pohle, Mimi Riser, Terry Dolbier, Ken Isoma and Kim Deme; and step grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Cassandra, Amber, Alex and Andrew.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at the Babson Park Community Church. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 1:00 pm.
