WINTER HAVEN - Ray Briggs Miller, 81 passed away March 2, 2013, at home following an intense battle with cancer.
Mr. Miller was born September 26, 1931 in Altoona, PA, son of Raymond Mentzer Miller and Pauline Murray. He spent his childhood in Elizabethtown, PA. There he attended Elizabethtown High School and helped with the family-owned Children's and Ladies' Wear stores. Following graduation and attendance at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, he served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during the Korean War.
He retired after 28 years with Ford Motor Company, as a District Sales Manager.
He was an avid offshore big game fisherman, enjoying many trips to the Bahamas.
Mr. Miller also served as a High School Football Referee for over 26 years.
He was an internationally known Powerboat Racing Champion and was inducted into the American Powerboat Association Hall of Champions in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Juan Carman; sister, Marilyn Miller O'Brien (Tom) of Tucson, AZ., sons, Daniel Steven Miller, Michael Alan Miller; daughters, Lu Ann Miller Lock and Mary Ann Miller; stepdaughters, Carol Randolph Prats (Henry) and Brenda Randolph Cooney (Larry); grandsons Matthew Lock, Nicholas Miller, Kyle Ray Miller, Daniel James Prats, and granddaughter, Stefanie Carman Prats.
Also many cherished friends and acquaintances will miss Ray's abundant energy, positive outlook and big smile. He will certainly be remembered for his dignity and courage.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, Bartow or the American Cancer Research Society.
A "Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Saturday, March 9 from 2-4pm at Auburndale Yacht Club at Lake Ariana Park. Condolences can be sent to the home in Winter Haven.
