WINTER HAVEN - Coach Sam Bragg of Winter Haven passed away Friday, November 9, 2012 from respiratory failure. He was 85.
A native of Hodgesville, AL, born May 27, 1927, Sam moved here in 1950 from Marianna, FL. He was a self-employed farmer, and a US Army
veteran during the Korean War
. Sam coached Dixie league baseball for 26 years, mostly in Eagle Lake, and some at Sertoma Park. In 1988 he brought a team of Dixie Boys (13-14 year olds) to the Dixie League World Series in Scottsboro, Alabama, after winning the Florida State Championships. Sam attended the First Assembly of God in Eagle Lake, and was an a avid Alabama fan.
Sam was predeceased by his parents: Samuel Cleveland Bragg & Mary Elizabeth Porter Bragg, his sister: Lorene Sewell; his brothers: John L. Bragg, Odell Bragg, Ula Bea Bragg, Charlie Bragg, and Billy Bragg. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lannie Bragg; his sons: Cleveland Odell Bragg of Winter Haven, Daniel Lamar Bragg (Audra) of Lakeland, Gary Allen Bragg of Polk City, Kevin Lee Bragg (Maria) of Columbus, SC; his daughters: Carla Bragg Harris (Dan) of Polk City, Sharla Bragg Burgess (Mike) of Lakeland, Marla Kay Homan (Gene) of New Smyrna, Shan Ellen Haggas of Melborne, Laverne Prater of Winter Haven, Sheila Tate of Georgia, Phyllis Vaughn (Chris) of Tallahassee, Lenora Quimby of Vero Beach, his sisters: Elizabeth Roberson (Billy) of Bristol, FL, Lucy Barrentine of Marianna, FL, and Minnie Watford of Cottondale, FL. Sam also leaves behind 38 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday at the First Assembly of God in Eagle Lake.
