WASHINGTON, D.C. - Richard A. Jaeggi, 60, founder and executive director of Gandhi Brigade, a nonprofit youth digital media development group to engage young people in the life of community which was based in Silver Springs, Maryland, died May 25, 2014, at a hospital in Washington, DC. The cause of death was brain cancer.
Mr. Jaeggi was a resident of Riverdale, MD, born in New Brunswick, N.J., and graduated from Winter Haven High School and Florida State University.
Before starting Gandhi Brigade nine years ago, Richard was the co-director of "For Love of Children", a nonprofit organization that mentors youngsters to help them graduate from high school. Earlier in his career, he worked as a director at the "Center for Urban Progress" at Howard University and the "Skill Builders" youth construction training program at "Manna". He also was a "Peace Corps" volunteer in Nepal where he helped build village water systems. Richard was the director of "Tallahassee Habitat for Humanity." He was active in civic and church groups in Silver Springs.
Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo Jaeggi. He is survived by his wife, Yoshiko and three children: Lisa of Brooklyn NY, Daniel of Austin, TX, and Isaac of Riverdale, MD; his father Allen Jaeggi (Penny) of Winter Haven, FL; brother Dwight Jaeggi (Chantal) of Fountain Valley, CA; sisters Cindy Green (Roger) of Radford, VA, and Barbara Connor (Davis) of Lake Wales, FL.
A Memorial service to celebrate Richard's life and honor his memory will be held Saturday, June 7th, 10:00 AM at Christ Congregational Church in Silver Springs, MD. Contributions can be made in Richard's memory at Gandhi Brigade, 8661 Colesville Road, Silver Springs, MD 20910.
