LAKE WALES - Mr. Fortunato DiRusso, 96, of Lake Wales, Florida died on Sunday, December 26, 2010, at his home, of natural causes.
He was born January 29, 1914 to Nicholas and Anna Magliocca DiRusso in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Lake Wales thirty-four years ago from North Bellmore, New York. He was a very capable master plumber and retired as a plumbing supervisor for Nassau Community College. He was exempted for military service during WW II as his skills as a steam fitter were necessary for the war effort. He helped to retrofit and rebuild the U.S.S. Solace in to a hospital ship. Fortunato was an ex-captain of the Emergency Department of the Roosevelt Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps. He also volunteered for the North Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the New York State Fireman's Association. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Wales.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years Regina, sons Eugene DiRusso and wife Elizabeth of Fredericksburg, VA, Nicholas Lawrence DiRusso of Medford, NY, and Joseph Mark DiRusso and wife Donna of East Farmingdale, NY, three grandchildren Patricia, Thomas, and Susan, seven great grandchildren, his brother-in-law Michael Maresco and wife Nell Rose, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter Debby Samuels and her husband Gregg, and brothers Albert, Joe, and Frank.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 30, 2010, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with a Wake service at 3:00 P.M. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Fr. William O'Connell officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Wales Cemetery.
