LAKELAND - John Richard Hughes, 67, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at his residence of cancer.
Born August 16, 1943 in Little Rock, AR to Isaac & Willis Hughes, Mr. Hughes has been a resident of Lakeland for 45 years, moving from Pickens, SC. He was a commercial truck driver for Overnite Transportation Co. for 21 years. He was formerly with Watkins Motor Line and a Fire Fighter for the city of Lakeland. He was a Vietnam Navy veteran. He was an Elder with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Bartow.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years; Jayne S. Hughes; two sons: Ike Hughes (Michelle) Fairlea, WV, Richard Hughes (Jacqui) Lakeland; daughter: Katie Harden (Dave), Colona, IL; brother: William Hughes (Martha), Central, SC; grandchildren: Dustin "Duck" Ledford, Gregory Hughes, Lucas Hughes, Zackary Hughes, and Keegan Hughes; step grandchildren: Lee Led-ford III, Luke Ledford, Christina Harden, Vincent Harden; & gt grandson: Gage Harden. He is preceded in death by a grandson Hunter Hughes.
Family will receive friends Tuesday, June 7, 2011, 6-8 pm at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St, Bartow. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 10:00 am at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 205 E. Stanford St, Bartow. Interment will follow in Bartow Wildwood Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the ARP Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 1411, Bartow 33831 or Good Shepherd Hospice, P.O. Box 7129, Winter Haven, 33880.
