JANET GOLDEN Obituary

JANET BELL
GOLDEN, 64

WINTER HAVEN - Janet Bell Golden, age 64, passed away at Winter Haven Hospital on Friday, September 12, 2014, after a short illness, while surrounded by loving friends.
Janet was born on February 1, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Elizabeth and Raymond Golden. Both her parents and sister, Carol Anne Golden, have predeceased her.
After the family moved to Florida, she attended schools in Winter Haven. Janet graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta and began a distinguished career teaching chemistry beginning at South Gwinnett High School and later at Heritage High School in Conyers, Georgia, where she not only taught general chemistry classes, but also Advanced Placement Chemistry and served as department chair. She went on to earn her masters and education specialist degrees.
While living in Atlanta, Janet was an active member of the Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa education sorority. After serving in local, district and state offices and having over 25 years of membership, she was awarded a 'Silver Sister' designation in the sorority.
After retiring from the Georgia system, Janet moved back to Winter Haven and taught chemistry at Polk State College for the past twelve years. She was a respected educator and friend.
Once back in Winter Haven, Janet resumed her membership at First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and Chairman of both the Personnel and Youth Scholarship committees. Janet also became active in the local branch of the Chapter U of PEO. She served twice as President and was currently Vice-President of the chapter.
Janet was a devoted daughter and sister, and loving caretaker of her beloved Beagle, Jenny. She was wonderful to her many friends who appreciated both her kindness and quick wit. In addition Janet was a fantastic gardener, superb cook, voracious reader and lover of all things connected with the beach!
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 18.
Those wishing to make a contribution in Janet's memory may make donations to the Humane Society or Good Shepherd Hospice Women of Giving.

My grandmother lived on the third floor of Janet's grandmother house in Baltimore-1940s through the late 1960s near Walbrook Junction. We played together as kids on Sundays. Then the family moved to Florida. Such a kind person and a great family. I can't believe they are all gone! Her greatmother who also lived in the house was called Mother Bell. Mark Stairiker, Oregon

I have so many fond memories of Janet from working together at Heritage, carpool, Alpha Delta Kappa, her cooking dinner for my family-whatever my father requested, and many more. She was an excellent teacher who had an impact on many lives, and she will be missed.

You were such an inportant part of my chemistry teaching career and my sisterhood in Alpha Delta Kappa. Your quick wit, great smile, sharing nature, and unique personality will never be forgotten. Hopefully, heaven will have crab cakes to eat and lots of mysteries to read. Lastly, Ron always thought of you as his favorite Republican and so enjoyed the lively political discussions
over the years. He will miss those opinions of yours.
Love and until later,
Barbara, Ron, and Wes

Ms. Golden was my chemistry teacher in high school in the mid 90s. My favorite memories of her are all her wonderful Christmas decorations she used every year to decorate her room. It makes me smile just to think about those. She really tried hard to reach high school students by coming up with interesting experiments. We once made bubbles that we could set on fire with a torch! When I could not understand what exactly a "mole" was...I promise you...she probably explained it to me a dozen different ways before I finally "got it". She was patient and kind and fair. Those are the memories that really stick with me almost 20 years later. Thank you, Ms. Golden. You made a difference.

Janet was one of those special teachers who generated respect from both her students and peers. Everyone knew her as a special woman, genuine and caring, and loving. She also had a talent for teaching such a difficult subject as chemistry with panache. She will be missed.

Ms. Golden was an inspiration to all she touched. I struggled as a chemistry student at Heritage and her solution was to have a slumber party with our core strugglers. Janet Golden taught from her heart and cared deeply for each of her students. May she have her just reward in Heaven for all the beauty she left behind.

Ms. Golden was an incredible teacher in my life. I wish that I was able to convey that to her while she was teaching. Chem-is-try-it! still stays with me after all the years. She is missed.

Sad news for Heritage alumni. Ms. Golden was one of those amazing teachers who loved what she did and helped us all to appreciate and frequently enjoy chemistry, even as we struggled to understand and meet the high standards she set for us. I had so many exceptional teachers in my life, and she was one of the best.

You were a part of our family and will be greatly missed. Thank you for the love and kindness you gave our sons, even sitting through their beginning piano recitals. Wonderful times with Angie, Andrea and others when we taught together at Heritage High and then when we went to New Smyrna beach to visit. Will miss sitting out on the balcony all together enjoying the ocean breeze in the afternoon! You will be in our hearts forever!
Love to you,
