WINTER HAVEN - Lt. Commander Mary M. Woods (97) of Winter Haven died May 27, 2011 of natural causes.
She was a native of Chillicothe, Ohio, who came to Winter Haven in 1970 from New Orleans, Louisiana. She retired as a Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in the Intelligence Office of the Headquarters, Eight Naval District in New Orleans, LA.
She was a graduate of Miami University of Oxford, Ohio and did post graduate study at New York University. She received her military training at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. And the Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, California.
She was a life member of the Retired Officers Association, a charter member of Citrus Center Chapter of Retired Officers Association, a charter member of the Naval Intelligence Retirees of Florida, charter life member of Theater Winter Haven, a member of the United Way of Central Florida Leadership Giving Association, a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, the Naval Intelligence Professionals and an original member of Saint Matthews Catholic Church of Winter Haven, FL.
She was the widow of the late LCDR John "Mac" McSwain Woods, Jr. She is survived by numerous surrogate grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at Saint Matthew Church, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 10 o'clock. Burial Service will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Winter Haven Hospital Foundation, Saint Matthew Church Group, Theater Winter Haven, or Good Shepherd Hospice.
