LAKELAND - Billy L. Cross, 89, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 25, 2013, as a result of complications of surgery.
Mr. Cross was born May 19, 1924 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He and his family moved to Lakeland in 1934. Mr. Cross was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He served during World War II where he stormed Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy and fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Cross also served his community as the owner/operator of Rapid Shoe Repair on Main Street in Lakeland. He was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church in Lakeland. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Cross is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Alice Cross; daughter, Teddie Mumbauer and her husband, Matt; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
Mr. Cross' family will receive friends Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 3-4 pm at Lakeland Funeral Home at 2125 South Bartow Highway in Lakeland. A celebration of Mr. Cross' life will follow at 4pm with Pastor William "Bill" McCabe officiating. Interment will be conducted privately at Lakeland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in Mr. Cross' honor, to a charitable organization of your choice. Condolences may be made to the Cross family at
