LAKELAND - Mr. Donald L. Goddard, born in Cambridge, MA. 3/17/23, passed away on July 31, 2009 at his daughter's home in Lakeland, FL. due to complications from surgery.
Donald taught school for many years on L.I., N.Y. After retirement, he moved to Mulberry, FL., with his long-time friend and loving partner Janice Delguidice.
Donald will be remembered as a very kind, highly intelligent "free thinker". He had a wonderful sense of humor. When the doctor asked him when his birthday was, Donald replied "March 17". When the doctor asked "What year", Donald replied "every year!". Donald spent a lot of time going to yard sales and buying children's books. He would distribute them to children around his neighborhood. In the wee hours before sun up he would walk around his neighborhood and move newspapers strewn at the end of driveways up to his neighbors' homes so "those elderly ladies won't have to walk so far!"
In his later years, Donald did everything he could to support his children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
Donald was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific between 1943-1946. He was also a member of the American Legion of Mulberry.
He is predeceased by both his parents Simon and Katherine Goddard, and his brother Arthur Goddard. He is survived by his son Mark Goddard of Lakeland, FL., daughters Susan Meynell of Lakeland, FL., and Jane Chamberlain of Portland, ME., very special friends Janice Delguidice, Bruce Darby and ex-wife Joan Fisher.
Private memorial services will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Condolences may be sent to: Seigler Funeral Home, 1300 E. Canal St., Mulberry, FL., 33860.
In lieu of flowers, please donate books to children in need.
