LAKELAND - Dr. Elena V. Valena of Lakeland passed away on Mar. 1, 2013 at the age of 82, due to complications from a stroke.
She was born in San Jose, Camarines Sur, Philippines on Aug. 17, 1930 to Dominiciano and Salvacion Valer.
In 1954, she received her M.D. from the University of Santo Tomas where she met her husband, Loe Valena, M.D. They immigrated to the US in 1956 and were married in Brooklyn, NY July 1957. They returned to the Philippines in 1961 and practiced medicine in Calauag, Quezon for 10 years before returning to the US and settling in Greenville, PA, in 1975, where she practiced internal medicine. Upon retirement in 1993, they moved to Polk City then later to Lakeland.
Elena devoted her life to her family, friends and her profession. She enjoyed playing piano, singing, ballroom dancing, and hosting dinner parties. She also assisted with Loe's work with Filipino American Association of Polk County (FAAPCO) and was active in the St. Joseph Catholic Church faith community.
Elena is survived by their six children, Melinda (Michael) Sheets, Liza (Ed) Myers, Cynthia (Joseph, Jr), Nelson Valena, M.D., Vanessa (Rob) Tinsley, and Ben (Melissa) Valena and fourteen grandchildren, all living out of state. She is also survived by her sister, Beatrice (Roberto) Garchitorena, of Vancouver, B.C. Canada.
Elena's life was enriched with the love of many cousins, nieces and nephews in the US and Philippines. She will be truly missed, especially at both the Dizon and Valena reunions.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 5th, 5 to 8 pm at Gentry-Morrison, Northside Chapel, 5245 US 98 North, Lakeland, FL 33809. The funeral Mass will be on March 6th, at 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 210 W. Lemon St. in Lakeland, FL. Internment will follow Mass at Serenity Gardens, 3350 Mall Hill Rd, Lakeland, FL.
