U.S. Air Force Captain

BARTOW - Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Orr, age 97, died Monday, June 6, 2011 of natural causes.
She was born on July 9, 1913 in Westmount, Montreal, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennon Smith, American Citizens. When her father died, her mother moved to Bartow, Florida, where her mother's sister, Mrs. John Swearingen lived. Elizabeth was a graduate of Summerlin Institute, currently Bartow High School and also from Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, where she was member of the Chi Omega Fraternity. Mrs. Orr was a Captain in the US Air Force, after the Air Force she worked with Scudder, Stevens & Clark Investment Council for 8 years. She met her late husband, Nathaniel Alexander Orr, who was from North Carolina, and was in the Navy in WWII. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. She was a member of the WAC during WWII and she was a member of Bartow First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Kennon Smith of Bartow; two nieces, Bess Kirk of Henrico, VA and Lynn Carol Campbell of Blowing Rock, NC; two nephews, F. David Smith of Durham, NC and Robert LeRoy Smith of Montpelier, VA.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont, NC. Service will be officiated by the Rev. John Douglas Storey of Virginia, son of Elizabeth's first cousin, Mary Joy Smith Storey. A memorial service will be announced at the First United Methodist Church of Bartow after the burial in Belmont, NC. Condolences may be made to the family at
