Hello-
I was not able to attend any services as I am homeless and without a car. I currently stay in a shelter and ride the busses to get around. As the bus system was down for the holiday, I was not able to go to the Lakeland service or any other event going on in the county.
But I would like to say my thank you's to the ones who have served in our military and those that have fought and been injured or died in war. Thank you to you all for keeping us free, for giving us our homeland and freedoms.

On this Memorial Day I want to say "Thank you" to all the service men and women who put themselves in harms way to protect our freedom. Particularly I want to remember a special young man I got to know and watch him grow up and ultimately pay the price for our freedom. PFC Anthony Simmons was killed by an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, July 8, 2010. He served beside his brothers, including his biological brother, Nick, who was is the same unit. I remember them hip to hip most of thier lives so I wasn't surprised when they signed up to serve our country together. Anthony was a creative, artistic and personable 25 year old man who lived life to the fullest and loved his family dearly. May we all take a minute and remember those very special individuals this weekend. Thanks again, Ant.
You loving stepmom, Diana Simmons

My name is Bill McCraney and I am a Veteran of the Korean War. This is to pay honor and tribute to two warriors of that war who did not come home, but who helped assure that I did. My squad leader who taught me how to survive combat, Sgt Virgil Fisher from Washington State, the other a hero who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for Valor, Lt Paul E Clawson from New Jersey. Lt Clawson had enough confidence in me, I was only 18 at the time, to promote me to squad leader. I still think of them often.

My name is Rhonda Smith. My son, Sgt. Keith A. Coe was killed in Kahlis, Iraq on April 27, 2010. Keith was the toughest person I have ever known. He was a devoted father and husband. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. My heart aches that his children will grow up without him.

On this Memorial Day 2011 it is with a grateful heart I say 'THANK YOU' to all our Military and many Veterans. They are true HEROS ! So many have paid the ultimate price - they gave their all for our GREAT COUNTRY. My family personally lost my Mother's Brother, John W. Tucker , who was killed in France in WW11. He was put to rest at the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial located in France. Many years have passed but the terror of war remains devastating. Thank you again to our troops everywhere and our courageous Veterans who have with whole heartiness protected our freedom. You will never be forgotten! God bless the USA ! This is to honor to my friend Captain James A. (Twig) Branch, USAF. He was based out of McDill AFB in Tampa, Fl., and flew F4C Phantom jets. He gave his life in combat in Viet Nam in 1967. He loved flying and owned a Fairchild PT26 that he flew for pleasure. He also loved fast cars and drove a Corvette. He loved his country for which he gave his life. Remembering an Uncle, William Jackson who died in Korea. Just a young man who gave his life for our freedom.
Harlin Harris enlisted in the US Army and served in Vietnam where he lost his life. His memory lives on through his friends. You are forever in our hearts, our memories. To my son, Richard (Harlin) who served in the US Navy, thank you. I'm sure you made him proud. Classmate Richard Pendley also a casualty of Vietnam. For those who are serving today, you are the best! You deserve so much more than you are given, but rest assured that what you do will one day be rewarded to you! Thank you and our prayers are always with you. Come home safe!

I would like for you to honor my friend Kyle Addair. I first meet Kyle when he moved to Lakeland from West Virginia with his parents Mr. & Mrs. Homer Addair and his brother Ken.
We quickly become friends as we both attended Medulla School where his dad was my teacher and the next year our principal at the new Southwest Jr. High. We both also attended Lakeland High and Florida Southern College together and went to church together at Methodist Temple here in Lakeland.
Kyle was a real likeable young man, a good student and a good friend.
Kyle was always full of adventure. He was an excellent driver and loved to drive fast cars, owned a motorcycle and he took flying lessons from a man named Charlie who taught lessons out of a cow pasture between Lakeland and Plant City. Kyle said if I can fly out of a pasture it should be easy to fly from an airport.
Kyle and I had lots of fun together as teenagers growing up in Lakeland in the 50’s and 60’s. I remember one time Kyle and I scraped together all the money we had and bought a car for $50.00 thinking we could make some money by re-selling it but we were in such a financial bind that we ended up selling it for $55.00 because we were completely broke and needed the money.
Another time we went to Daytona Beach with $20.00 between us for a 3-day trip to the beach. Believe it or not we had enough money left to buy gas to get home.
As they say the best things in life are free!!!
As soon as Kyle graduated from College he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the ARMY and immediately left for Vietnam to serve our Country. Kyle was killed in battle on February 23 the following year at the age of 24. He was survived by his parents Homer and Marie Addair and brothers Ken, and Mike and wife Jane McKibben Addair. He was buried at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
I often think of Kyle and especially on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
In memory of Kyle I have his picture hanging on the wall of my office with his name which my brother etched off the wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.

This is in memory of my cousin Bruce Wayne Carter, who was just nineteen years old when he arrived in Vietnam with the Second Btln. Third Marines in 1969.
Bruce was the only son of my aunt Georgie Carter Krell and my uncle Frank Krell of Miami Springs, Florida.
In August of 1969, Bruce's unit was under a heavy enemy crossfire, when Bruce stood in full view of the North Vietnamese soldiers and delivered a devastating volume of fire, killing several of the enemy and forcing the remainder to retreat from the area.
While shouting directions to the Marines around him, PFC Carter observed a hostile grenade land between him and his fellow Marines. Fully aware of the probable consequences of his action, but determined to protect the men following him, he unhesitatingly threw himself over the grenade, absorbing the full effects of its detonation with his body.
Bruce gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
Bruce was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The above information was from Bruce's award. The Miami Veterans Administration hospital is named in honor of Bruce.

This is in memory of my Uncle Amedee Deschenes having been recognized by the city of Nashua, NH for his valor in World War One.
While stationed in Xivray, France, German troops rushed the line of his platoon through a thick fog --- his battalion was greatly outnumbered. Upon what seemed to be an obvious loss, Private Deschenes leapt up to the top of the trench and fired his Chauchot weapon into the German army. Deschene's automatic gun was one of few provided to the troops as it took a trained and capable hand to handle. He bravely stood into enemy fire and sent a waterfall of ammunition rounds into leader after German leader until all had fallen or retreated. His bravery and action surely saved his battalion from certain death and capture. In his memory and recogniton of his valor, a monument and park was dedicated to him and is still existing in Nashua, NH known as Deschenes Park and Oval. It's not often we hear about World War One nowadays. My uncle was killed by Mustard Gas which thankfully now is outlawed by the Geneva convention.
I am proud of my uncle's valor and dedication giving his life to his country as are the people of Nashua, NH.

My thoughts go back to WW11 when my Mother's Brother was killed in France. Even though I was small at the time it made me realize that freedom was not free and that we owe our liberty to those who gave their all. It was a very sad day when my Family received the news of the death of our loved one. He gave his all for our freedom. What a sacrifice. I'll never forget! My Uncle was buried at Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial in France. His Son has visited his Dad's grave-site there. Military and Civilian heroes are everywhere and on this Memorial Day 2009 we hold the torch high in thanks to ALL. In memory of PFC James Spivey from Ft. Meade who sacrificed his life in Viet Nam. I was 11 when he died. I met "Jimmy" when he worked at the A&P store in Ft. Meade before his deployment overseas. Although there was only 8 years between us, it was alot then. Now it doesn't mean anything. Jimmy always treated me like I was somebody. I was just a stupid little girl who had a crush on him just because he was nice to me. I still remember the last time I saw him. 40 years later, and I haven't forgotten. I never gave up anything for any freedoms but Jimmy willingly traded his life for our country. Thank you to Jimmy for a job well done by a fine young man and the many young men like him who lost their lives for people like me.
