HAINES CITY - Helen Lundberg Lawhorn, 100, of Haines City and Tallahassee, Florida passed away on November 20, 2012 of natural causes.
Helen was a native of Polk County, having been born at home in an orange grove just west of Davenport, FL, on September 28, 1912. Her parents had emigrated from Sweden to Chicago in 1881, moving to Florida in 1910. She attended elementary school in Davenport and Haines City, graduating from Haines City High School in 1927. Following graduation, she attended Florida State College for Women (FSU) for one year. She then completed her business education at Southern University in Atlanta, GA. In 1936, she married her high school classmate and sweetheart, T. Irven (Irdie) Lawhorn. They were married 63 years at the time of his death in 1999. Helen moved to Tallahassee in 2007 to be closer to her family.
Helen was an active member of her community and of First Baptist Church (now NorthRidge Baptist). She was a Sunday School teacher, a president of the WMU, and also a past president of the Ridge Association WMU. She was a past president of the Haines City Woman's Club and the Garden Club of Lake Eva. As a founding member of the Heart of Florida Hospital Auxiliary, she was an early president of this group. Helen took seriously her role as mentor and friend to those in need. Her gracious hospitality was enjoyed by many.
Helen is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Grace Lawhorn, Tallahassee; grandchildren: Angela Ramsay (Mike), Chuluota, FL, Laurel Beth Lamendola (Greg), Tallahassee, FL, Courtney Frasca (Paul), Huntsville, AL, Lindsey Rodrigue (Mike), Tallahassee, David Akom (Mary), Deltona, FL, and Michael Akom (Julie), East Waterboro, ME. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Dylan and Kaitlyn Ramsay, Drew Lamendola, Alex and Samantha Frasca, Anna and Emma Rodrigue, Tessa Akom, and Max and Calvin Akom. Also surviving are brother-in-law, J.N. (Skip) Lawhorn (Doris) and nieces Diane Mclean (Rich) and Celia Lawren. Nephew Keith Lawhorn, son of the late E. S. (Stan) Lawhorn also survives, as well as other beloved family members including her church family at NorthRidge Baptist. Also surviving is International Exchange Student "son", Tetsuji (Ted) Murase of Fukoyoko City, Japan. Also surviving her are many longtime Haines City friends, as well as frequent companions of the last several years including Eddie Dean Hudson and Joy Smith.
