LAKELAND - Mrs. June Hallett Stearns, 79, passed away on November 26, 2013, from colon cancer, at home with her family beside her.
June was born on August 30, 1934 in Niagara Falls, NY. She graduated from Niagara High School in 1952 and then received her degree in Early Childhood Education at the State University of NY at Brockport in 1956. In the same year she married Bernard L. Stearns, of Ellicottville, NY, in Niagara Falls NY. June began teaching kindergarten in Albion, NY and then at Medina, NY, each for a year.
June left teaching to raise her three children where she was active in her church as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, adult fellowship leader for 1 year in two churches. In the 1980s June started using live trees and wreaths at Christmas time for the Brighton NY Presbyterian Church. A significant activity was assisting in starting a clothing collection room for those less fortunate that is still benefiting people today. She was awarded as a honorary member of the program agency of the United Presbyterian Church USA. In 1987 she and her husband moved to the Colonnades in Lakeland Florida. Her extracurricular activities included camping, playing the piano, singing in the Glee Club, and leading adult programs and activities at the Colonnades. She enjoyed playing an active part at the Colonnades including starting the kitchen band and many chorus programs for 18 years.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and friend who never complained and was positive about everything even after life tested her countless times.
A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the Colonnades clubhouse, off of west Pipkin road in Lakeland beginning at 9:30 am. June is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bernard, sister: Mary Irish, brother: Bill Hallett, daughters: Laurie Ann and Kathy Heath, son: Gregory, 4 grandchildren & 4 great grandchildren & all those who had the privilege to know her.
