WINTER HAVEN- Mrs. Mary Kathryn Freeland of Winter Haven, Florida, died peacefully at the age of 98 on September 29, 2012, at the Mars Hill Retirement Community, Mars Hill, NC. One of three children of Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Hill, she was born in Liberty, Iowa on August 5, 1914. She graduated from Mt. Ayr High School, Mount Ayr, Iowa, and attended Iowa State University. In 1931, she married John E. Freeland and had two children. She was an avid cook and a world traveler with her husband. They traveled to over 80 countries in their 65 years together. She also spent 38 years as a volunteer with the Winter Haven Hospital, and was a member of PEO, a philanthropic educational organization that provides scholarships to women, for 70 years.
Mary is survived by her son, Philip E. Freeland and Fran Freeland, of Waynesville, NC, and her daughter, Susan F. Basini, of Bakersville, NC; her granddaughters, Melanie Freeland of Tampa, Florida, and Leigha Basini, of Washington, DC.
A grave-side service will be held at Rolling Hills Cemetery at 11:00 on Thursday, October 4th, with a visitation at Ott Laughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 7:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CarePartners Hospice of Asheville, NC, at 68 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
