VAN BAALEN, Sr., 80

FRANKLIN, IN - Mr. Richard L. Van Baalen, Sr., 80, passed away from heart failure on December 24, 2012. He was a resident of Franklin and a former long-term resident of Lakeland, FL. He was born May 30, 1932 in Logansport, IN the son of Dewald and Daisy (Reeser) Van Baalen. He married Emily Rose Reynolds (1954) who preceded him in 1996. He married Alice Butz in 2004, she survives.
Survivors include four children (Richard, Rebecca (Schmitt), Mark, Peter), five grandchildren (Amy, Sarah (Price), Charles, Christina (Robinson), Eric), and five great-grandchildren Joshua Price, Serena and Charles Van Baalen, Zoe and Kaiden Robinson). He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Phillip of Peru, IN.
Dick served in the U.S. Army (Indiana National Guard) as a Medical Specialist and worked for General Motors (Delco Remy Division) in Anderson, IN until his retirement, when he relocated to Lakeland, FL (1990).
In addition to working at Sears Roebuck after retirement, Dick actively volunteered at the Equipment Lending Library in Lakeland, recycling durable medical equipment for special needs children in the central Florida area. In 2008 Dick and Alice relocated to the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, IN. Until his death Dick actively volunteered at the Masonic Home and with the USO at Camp Atterbury, IN.
Dick was a member of the Lakeland Shrine Club, Egypt Temple, Shriners International, Sesame Grotto in Lakeland. A member of the Indiana Ransford OES, a vested member of the Scottish Rite, National Sojourners, Indiana Masonic Home High Twelve Club #545, a Tyler for the Devol Lodge #766 F. & A.M. He found great pleasure becoming Mr. Brightly "a clown with a great heart"
A Masonic memorial will be held at the Indiana Masonic Home Chapel, on January 11 (1 pm) followed by a memorial service. Dick's remains will be interned at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 44210, Franklin, IN.
