LAKELAND - Martha Hansen, a former school teacher who spent much of her time since retirement tutoring privately and at Talbot House, died Sunday evening (Feb. 17, 2013) in Lakeland. She was 90.
Born Martha Emily Dwyer on May 9, 1922 in Brownsville, PA she and her future husband Henry Hansen, Jr. graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1940. Married in 1942, she graduated from Kent State University in 1944 with a degree in Education. Her early post-graduation years were spent as minister's wife, substitute school teacher and mother. She began full time school teaching in the 60s, was widowed in 1968, and retired for medical reasons in 1980. Since moving to Lakeland in 1982 she has been active as a member and served as Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church.
Her penchant for teaching was further satisfied by countless hours spent volunteering as a private tutor, helping many people learn to read, speak, and write English, and many more successfully gain their G.E.D. In addition to private tutoring, she proudly served as a volunteer tutor at Talbot House for over 30 years.
She is survived by four children: Grant (Ann) Hansen, Sue (Rob) Atchley, Peter (Jeanne) Hansen, & LuAnn Triest; five grandchildren: Rob Atchley, Jon Triest, Josh Atchley, Amanda Triest, & Wyatt Hansen; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 23rd in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Lakeland at 10AM. Martha has expressed a desire for no flowers. A donation in her name to Talbot House is suggested.
