WINTER HAVEN - Ulysses J.C. Williams "Tom", 78, passed away 1/20/14 at Good Shepherd Hospice, Lakeland, due to liver complications.
He was born 3/31/35 in Louisa, KY to Luther and Hazel Williams. He served 37 years in the US Navy (Regular and Reserve) and retired as a Captain. His special bond with the Navy began at age 17. At 19 he was a Tin Can sailor aboard the USS McCaffery DD860, one of his most cherished memories. After the Mac, he served on 3 different Reserve Destroyers; DD658, DD674 and DD696. Tom kicked off the "Cans" after receiving a commission. Later he served in various Seabee billets; Detachment 0-1-C, Battalion 14th Seabees 3rd Seabee Regiment and First Seabee Brigade.
In his non-military career he spent 29 years working for Miles Labs, retiring as Southern Regional Manager. Here as with the Navy, he acquired many long-lasting friends. Tom was a graduate of University of North Florida and lived in Jacksonville, FL for 41 years.
In 1998, he and his wife Shirley, of 57 years, moved to Winter Haven, FL enjoying traveling and other pursuits in this lovely city. Later years brought him a keen and exciting interest in Winter Haven 912, a passionate and hardworking group concerned about our America. Quickly these folks became close to Tom's heart.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Shirley, daughter Andra Young, her husband Bob Young, son Stevan, 2 grandsons Blake and Bobby, 2 great grandsons Isaac and Kale, brothers Bo (Nancy) and Bob (Karynn), sister Judy (Jerry) and numerous nieces and nephews.
