WINTER HAVEN - Eleanor Filchak Comkowycz, 86, passed away from natural causes at home June 12, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Born November 2, 1927, she grew up in Plymouth, PA. The family moved to Derby, CT when Eleanor was a teenager. After graduating as Valedictorian of her high school class, Eleanor attended St. Raphael's School of Nursing in New Haven, CT and became an RN. She worked many years at Griffin, Laurel Heights, and Hewitt Hospitals in CT. After retiring to FL in 1978, she enjoyed working at Cypress Gardens where she made many friends.
Predeceased by her loving husband Stephen Comkowycz of 61 years, Eleanor is survived by her four sons: Steve Comkowycz of Windsor, CT, Paul Comkowycz of Winter Haven, James Comkowycz of Bradenton, and Thomas Comkowycz of Manchester, CT, as well as eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also predeceased by a brother, John Filchak, Eleanor is survived by her sister, Theresa Bogan of Port Charlotte and her brother, Edward Rulka of Gainesville.
Eleanor had a great love for her family, hosting many family dinners and holiday celebrations where she shared her Polish traditions. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and proudly presented each of them with a personally designed handmade quilt. Eleanor loved to sew and won many ribbons for her quilts at the county fairs. She also was quite active in her church where she helped make beautiful banners that still surround the walls there.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew's Church in Winter Haven on Tuesday, June 17 at 9:00 A.M. Steele Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
