LAKE WALES - Anna Metz Bonneman, age 100, passed away peacefully at her home on August 28, 2010 of natural causes.
She was born in Key West, Florida on May 14, 1910. She was the daughter of Edna Catherine Bethea of Alachua, County and Edgar A. Watson of Columbia County, Florida. Her father, Edgar, has been the subject of four books by award winning author Peter Matthiessen: "Killing Mr. Watson", "Lost Man's River", "Bone by Bone" and "Shadow County" which won the National Book Award in 2009.
After her father's death in October, 1910, her mother moved the family to Defuniak Springs, Florida and subsequently married Mortimer Burkett who had been a childhood friend. Mr. Burkett adopted the three children of Edna and Edgar Watson giving them his name.
After graduation from college, Mrs. Bonneman worked as a school teacher in Santa Rosa County, Florida. In August, 1932 she married Henry William (Jack) Bonneman and they moved to Lake Wales, Florida. Mrs. Bonneman worked as a social Worker for the State of Florida until the birth of her children, Frederick William Bonneman, II born in 1943 and Barbara Ellen Bonneman in 1945. Jack Bonneman died suddenly a week after the birth of their last child so Anna returned to work with the State of Florida, continuing as a social worker until her retirement in 1979 following 45 years of service. In 1972 she received one of many awards from the State in recognition of valuable and unselfish contributions and services to the projects and programs of the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.
After her retirement from the State, she served as a volunteer with the Lake Wales Hospital Auxiliary for 10 years.
Mrs. Bonneman is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, Laura Kay Gilbert, her sister, Ruby Palmer of Defuniak Springs, and two brothers, Hampton Burkett of Lake Wales and Joseph M. Burkett of Lake Wales.
