Matthew James Smith, a resident of Lakeland, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 of cardiac failure at LRMC. He was 89 years old.
Matthew was born in New York City on March 1, 1921 to Matthew W. Smith of Athboy, Ireland and Margaret Hurley of Donegal, Ireland.
Matt served in the United States Air Force during World II. He and his wife Margaret resided in Yonkers, New York until they relocated to Lakeland in 1985. They were married 53 years until her death in 2002.
While living in New York, he owned and operated an automotive repair service with his brother for 3 decades.
