FAYETTEVILLE, PA - Dr. Bertram Von Lossberg Henry, 83, died on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at The Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, PA due to complications from cancer.
Dr. Henry is survived by his wife, Frances McCreight Henry of Catlett, VA and Lakeland, FL; four sons and their wives: Scott and Debby of Gettysburg, PA, Eric and Carol of Carlisle, PA, Kurt and Connie of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Craig and Robin of LaPlata, VA; two step-daughters and their husbands: Linda and Don Paris of Winter Haven, FL, Francie and Steve Monroe of Catlett, VA; and a step-son and his wife: W. Shannon and Mary Schroter of Oakland, CA. Also by two brothers and a sister: Maynard, Jr. and wife Mary of Hanover, PA, C. Wayne and wife Judy of Upton, PA, and Sheris Esken and husband Al of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine G. "Bim" Bowers; his sister, Barbara Small, and his brother, Larry Henry.
Dr. Henry earned degrees from Shippensburg State Teachers College, Pennsylvania State University, and Syracuse, University. He taught at Chambersburg, Carlisle, and Cumberland Valley School Districts in PA, Florida Southern College, and Mansfield State University.
He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army as an infantry trainer during the Korean Conflict. He was an educator and guide with the National Audubon Society and was a published author of bird field guides, including a guide to bird songs and a guide for the blind. He volunteered for 16 years making and serving sandwiches for the homeless in Lakeland, FL. In his younger years, he played basketball for Shippensburg State and for the semi-professional team, the Wonderclothes Rockets.
A life celebration service, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, November 24 at 3:30PM at the Carlisle Community Center, formerly Stevens Elementary School, 415 North Franklin Street, Carlisle, PA. Family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Center.
