LAKELAND - Harry Granville Maddox, born December 10, 1926, in Mayfield, Kentucky, died peacefully at Lakeland Regional Medical Center on November 17, 2012. Harry was a long-time Lakeland resident, men's clothing merchant and business owner, church leader, Rotarian, and a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Harry graduated from Mayfield High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, but declined the appointment to pursue his studies at Ohio State University. He later attended George Washington University where he pledged Sigma Chi Fraternity and served as a page in the United States House of Representatives. As a page he witnessed Congress's reaction to the death of President Roosevelt, the ending of WWII and the address of General Eisenhower to Congress upon the completion of the war. He referred to this period as his time served "in Congress."
Harry joined his father and brother traveling for the Curlee Clothing Company in North Carolina. In 1950 he married Leslie, who survives him. The newlyweds made their home in Sanford, N.C., but were soon relocated to Florida. After living in Orlando for one year, they moved to Lakeland, Florida, with their new son, Randy.
Harry opened Maddox Menswear in 1956. The same year his daughter, Jeannette was born. Two stores followed, at Grove Park and Searstown Shopping Centers. These classic men's clothing stores served the well-dressed men of Lakeland until 1974. From that time until his retirement Harry traveled for a clothing company, worked at Lanier Upshaw and served as President of the Revere Corporation.
Harry was a long time active member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Downtown Lakeland Rotary Club. An amateur carpenter, he lovingly restored many residences for his children and built amazing play structures for his grandchildren in Lakeland, Tampa and Baltimore, Maryland
Harry nursed his wife, Leslie through numerous illnesses with grace and compassion.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Leslie, his son Randy, daughter-in-law Julie, and granddaughters Jeannette, Caroline and Maryellen; and daughter, Jeannette, son-in-law, Kenneth, and grandsons Caleb, David and Robert.
In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to either the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, Florida or Rotary Downtown Lakeland, P.O. Box 2171, Lakeland FL 33806.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, 11AM at the First Presbyterian Church.
