LAKELAND - Karl Dean Hellwig, 86 of Lakeland, died November 24, 2012 due to natural causes.
Karl was born February 14, 1926 in Hammond, IN to Karl and Edna (DeArmand) Hellwig and moved to Lakeland in 1989. Karl is a WWII and Korean War Navy veteran. Karl was employed for Security Mutual Insurance in Chicago for over 25 years and retired after twenty-two years as Corporate Administrative Manager with Foremost Insurance Company in Grand Rapids, MI. During his career, Karl was a member of several professional groups. He served as a Chapter President, Area Director, and International Vice President of professionalization with the Administrative Management Society. He also served as the Board Chairman of the Academy of Certified Administrative Managers. He was a lifetime member of the International Facility Management Association for which he organized a chapter in Grand Rapids. Karl was also a member of the Association for System Management and was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. In his younger years, Karl was very active with his children in different school functions and served on the school board. He was also very involved in church activities and ministries.
Karl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eva JoAnn Hellwig of Lakeland; his four daughters, Karyl (James) McCullough of Lakeland, Pamela Howe of Easley, SC, Linda (James) Miller of Jenison, MI, Beth (Michael) Miller of Grand Rapids and his son, Kerry Hellwig of Hutto, TX. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and a daughter in law, Theresa Hellwig of Allegan, MI. Karl in preceded in death by his son, Karl "Rick" Hellwig and two granddaughters, Shelley Hellwig and Brianna Miller.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 6-8pm at the Lakeland Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place 10:30 am Thursday at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church. Interment will take place in Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
