CALENDER, 79
Veterinarian
LAKELAND - Mr. James Calender, 79, passed peacefully on Dec. 19, 2012, of heart complications.
He was born in Battle Creek, MI, to Walter and Elaine Calender on Nov. 1, 1933. Jim was a lifelong resident of Bellevue, MI, graduating from Belleview High School and going on to attend Michigan State University, graduating from the School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to a rewarding career, he was an avid gardener and MSU football & basketball fan.
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn (Bergman); children Karen (Mike) Dupree, Kevin, and Kurt (Jerri) Calender; grandchildren Katie and Steven Dupree, sister Shirley Downey, and his aunt Jeanne Winer.

Jim was a major influence in my life and a great mentor through my teen years and on into young adulthood. I think of him often and wish we would have stayed in closer touch. Dr. Calender was instrumental in pointing me in the direction of a career in veterinary medicine. His intellect, enthusiasm and willingness to teach inspired me and others to work hard and to achieve. Thank you Jim, we will remember you always.
